Pros and Cons of Workplace Automation

In a world of full-blown technology, there is little to no need for manual work when carrying out duties in the workplace. As technology is evolving, it has set the pace for efficiency among employees, thereby paving the way for accessibility and comfort in the professional world. The goal of workplace automation is to increase productivity and provide a better working experience among employees.

What is automation in the workplace?

Written by Okeowo Queen

Workplace automation refers to the use of technology and software to automate routine tasks and processes within a workplace, which can lead to increased efficiency, productivity, and cost savings.  Here are a few areas where automation can be utilized in the work environment:

  1. Customer service: Chatbots use artificial intelligence to automate customer service interactions. Email automated systems can answer common questions, and provide an estimated time frame for a response.

  1. Human resource management: HR software can automate tasks such as recruitment which include job posting, resume screening, and scheduling interviews. Employee onboarding which includes sending out offer letters, collecting information, etc.

  1. Banking and finance: Automation is used in banking and finance to streamline processes such as loan processing, customer service, and fraud detection. Customer service systems help customers with common inquiries such as account balance, transaction history, etc. This helps to improve accuracy, and response rate as well as ensure a good customer experience.

  1. Healthcare: In healthcare, automation is used to manage patient records in the form of EHRs (electronic health records) which makes it easier for patient check-ins and medication orders. Medical imaging technologies such as MRI, CT scan, and X-ray machines are also used to improve accuracy and reduce the need for manual interpretation.

  1. Manufacturing: Automation is widely used in manufacturing for various processes such as assembling which include tasks like cutting and drilling. Quality control which involves inspecting products for defects and checking specifications. This helps to increase productivity, reduce errors, and improve product quality.

However, there are pros and cons of automation in the workplace.

Pros:

  1. Increased efficiency: Enhanced efficiency is one of the main advantages of workplace automation. Automation enables businesses to accomplish more in less time by streamlining workflows, reducing errors, and speeding up operations.

  1. Cost savings: Automation may help bring down labour expenses and do away with certain manual labour in some situations. For instance, a company can use automated technologies to carry out operations like processing invoices that may previously have required a person's assistance.

  1. Increased accuracy: Compared to manual procedures, automated systems are programmed to operate with a high degree of consistency and accuracy, making them less likely to make errors and capable of carrying out tasks with higher precision.

  1. Better data management: Automated systems are more efficient in gathering, controlling, and processing data in real time from a range of sources, including databases and apps. They can also spot trends and patterns that are challenging for people to notice.

  1. Enhanced customer service: automated systems improve customer service including giving customers self-service options like online ordering, account management, etc.

Cons:

  1. Job displacement: As some tasks and processes become automated, one of the major worries about automation in the workplace is that it can result in job displacement. Workers who can't keep up with the evolving technological environment are being laid off as technology improves.

  1. Upfront costs: Setting up automation systems can be costly and requires a large investment in hardware, software, and training. To make sure they continue to operate effectively, they typically need maintenance and updates.

  1. Technical problems: Automated systems can be intricate and prone to software bugs, which can impair business operations. Systems that experience downtime or other problems could result in lost income and productivity.

  1. Cyber threats: Due to their internet connectivity, automated systems may be subject to security risks that jeopardize sensitive data, result in cyber threats like hacking and malware assaults, and cause serious harm to businesses.

  1. Potential for errors: Automation can assist to reduce errors, but it is not perfect. Automated systems may have errors or produce inaccurate findings, which can cause further issues in the future.

Automating the workplace has numerous advantages, but it also has drawbacks. Governments and private citizens must engage in job training programs to assist people in transferring into new roles that call for more specialized skills to lessen these negative consequences. As technology advances and businesses attempt to increase their productivity and competitiveness, automation will, overall, continue to play a significant part in modern workplaces.
